In the previous era, people said, “The five people closest to you determine the ceiling of your life.” In this era, Raymond would say: the five productivity tools used most often determine the ceiling of your capabilities.
Many people treat tools as “accelerators”—using a tool to do something faster than doing it manually. This understanding is too shallow. Tools do not only make a person faster; they change the way that person thinks.
The philosopher Martin Heidegger wrote in Being and Time that people often know and understand the world through tools as intermediaries. The tools someone uses directly affect how they think.
For example:
- People who manage projects in Excel think in terms of “tables, columns, and sorting.”
- People who manage projects in Notion think in terms of “relationships, links, and multiple dimensions.”
- People who manage knowledge in Obsidian think in terms of “networks, bidirectional links, and emergence.”
This is not to say one tool is better than another. Rather, the tool selected shapes the kind of thinker its user becomes.
So when choosing a tool, do not only look at the feature list. Ask: “Is the design philosophy behind this tool consistent with the way I want to think?”
Human history is a history of evolving tools—stone, fire, the wheel, the internet, and AI. The arrival of each new tool redefines what humans can do. Professionals need to continue exploring new tools, not to follow trends, but because a new tool may open a ceiling of capability they had never imagined.
